• Voting from your home permanent address will require knowing election dates for Early Voting and Election Day, and planning to travel home to vote on a day when the polls are open. • Or apply to vote by mail by the deadline and mail it so it reaches the Elections Office by Election Day. • Since it is more complicated to vote from home, consider registering and voting at your college residence address.

Know the ropes before you Register to Vote for the First Time!
• Complete an application using the Voter Registration Application. Simply download, fill in the required information, print, sign and mail the completed application directly to your county election office;

• Request a PRINTED APPLICATION. The Elections Office will mail a postage-paid voter registration application to the address provided; OR • Contact or visit your local HAYS COUNTY VOTER REGISTRAR (or other county if applicable) to complete the voter registration process. • Use the downloadable voter registration application addressed to the Hays County Elections Office here for the most prompt processing. The volume of applications to the Secretary of State's office is likely to cause delays. In Texas, the deadline to register to vote in any election is 30 days before Election Day.
While your first-time voter registration in Texas cannot be done online and MUST be signed by you in person. But you CAN update your address after a move or change your name you may do that through the Texas Secretary of State's Voter Name and Address Changes web pages. • You will need your · Texas Drivers License or Texas Personal ID · Date of Birth · Last 4 digits of your Social Security number · DPS Audit Number (from your drivers license or personal ID) · Voter Registration Card VUID (Voter Unique Identifier) number Find your VUID number on your voter registration card, at "Am I Registered" at VoteTexas.gov, or by calling your county voter registrar. If you want to double-check your registration status in Hays County, the Hays County Elections Office provides this link. You cannot see whether the Elections Office has the correct address for you, but you can verify that you are registered and in which precinct you are registered. To make sure they have your current address, call the Elections Office at 512-393-7310. The deadline to update your voter registration for a name change or change of address is the the same deadline to register to vote for that particular election.
Once you have the information you will need, you can proceed. Login and continue. The third page allows you to change your name, address, or both. Be sure to click Change after entering the new information. Note the instruction: Do not submit a business address, P.O. Box, or Rural Route as your Residence Address WARNING: If you only have a P.O. Box – or Rural Route – for delivery of your mail, updating your registration online may cancel your effort to update your registration. Call the Elections Department, 512-393-7310, for directions on how you can update your registration through their office.
